Marlborough is known as New Zealand’s premier wine region and it is for good reason. Boasting over 100 vineyards, this South Island region is THE destination for wine connoisseurs and those looking to taste the beauty of this popular area.

The region was described in Oz Clarke’s Wine Atlas as “one of the greatest places on earth to grow vines, producing some of the world’s most remarkable wines.” This flagship wine region put itself on the international wine stage for its impeccable Sauvignon Blanc, however there are a variety of other flavours grown and produced in the region that are worth mentioning, especially Pinot Noir. 

Here we touch on some of the best vineyards, wineries and cellar doors in the region. Founded in 1985 and later taken over by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy visitors will revel in the extravagance and luxury that is expected of the label. Cloudy Bay is an internationally acclaimed brand as it truly captures the essence of the Marlborough wine region while embodying the luxury of New Zealand and expressing the regional and national character.

Established as one of the first five wineries in the Marlborough region, Cloudy Bay creates a range of wines including the renowned Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Other wines include a sophisticated Te Koko made through wild fermentation and aged in old French oak and Te Wahi, created from an evocative distillation of Pinot Noir.

Cloudy Bay is an internationally acclaimed brand as it truly captures the essence of the Marlborough wine region while embodying the luxury of New Zealand and expressing the regional and national character.

The wines produced at Cloudy Bay can be tasted at their inviting Cellar Door located at the winery. With a spacious and atmospheric courtyard visitors can enjoy the delicious flavours of the wines while looking out onto the breathtaking vineyards and surrounding scenery. In summer guests can enjoy Jack’s Raw Bar, an outdoor wine lounge serving fresh wine and fresh local produce such as oysters. Tailor-made tastings are available for those who would prefer a more personalised experience at Cloudy Bar.

Previous visitors have raved about the service considering the large tour groups that visit regularly as well as the staff’s knowledge about their well-known products. Wine tastings come at a small fee from $5 tastings to $20. Guests will love relaxing in the beautiful atmosphere, swinging on the fashionable egg chairs or playing a spot of croquet – the choice is yours.

Since 1992 Fromm Winery has been crafting distinctive single vineyard wines that have become known and loved around the world. Producing intense, concentrated wines the makers follow the mantra of placing terroir – using the natural environment – over technology and quality over quantity. Combining old world winemaking skills and techniques with new world innovation, Fromm’s signature is one that can’t be passed up.

The Fromm Cellar Door provides visitors with tastes of a range of their wines including current release wines, vintage library releases as well as a select range of exclusive wines only available at the cellar door. Open to the public the staff at Fromm’s Cellar Door are happy to accommodate walk-in visitors. The Cellar Door has two different opening hours for the warmer months from October to April and the cooler months from May to September.

Fromm Winery enjoys there wine with a delicious meal and provide visitors to the vineyard as well as to their website with suitable food matches to their handful of wines. Pairings include a Mushroom Risotto with a glass of Pinot Noir, fresh oysters with Chardonnay and seasoned chicken or lamb with Syrah. They also provide visitors with tasting notes on their range of wines dating back to 1996.

This small, family-run winery is a must-visit in the Marlborough region, with over 25 years experience Nautilus Estate has had its aromatic doors open since 1985. Following a philosophy that wine is good by itself, but it’s even better when it’s paired with fine cuisine and great company, Nautilus has built a brand and taste that many across the world have fallen in love with. Creating carefully crafted, textured and expressive wines, the experienced hands behind the brand have built their reputation from the ground up.

The Tasting Room – or Cellar Door – is the perfect way to get a taste of the magic that happens at this winery. Inspired by traditional ‘Kentucky Barn’ architecture you can relax in this peaceful hideaway as you enjoy one of their delicious whites or reds. Complete with an underground cellar the tasting room provides visitors with cheese platters carefully paired to the wine your tasting. Personalised tours are also available for those who prefer it.

Focusing on sustainable wine production, Yealands Estate is a well-known, award-winning eco-friendly vineyard in the Marlborough region. Following the motto; Think boldly, tread lightly and never say it can’t be done, Yealands Estate works tirelessly to do just that with their creations. Their Seaview Vineyard provides breathtaking views of the area; more specifically the Cook Strait, and is the single largest privately owned vineyard in all of New Zealand.

Yealands Estate creates a range of wines including Marlborough favourites Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir as well as Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The estate also produces three unusual wine varieties – Viognier; a French white wine,Tempranillo; a Spanish red, and Grüner Veltliner; a dry white Austrian wine.

Visitors to Yealands Estate will love relaxing at the Cellar Door – a secluded hideaway open to the public. Providing guests with complimentary tastings of their extensive portfolio of wines, visitors won’t be disappointed as they take in the picturesque views of the estate.

Self-Guided vineyard tours along ‘The White Road’ are also available for guests to explore the beautiful, winding vineyards themselves. Visitors are encouraged to settle down for a picnic at the top of the hill surrounded by the luscious vines and beautiful blue water.

Spy Valley Wines

This family-owned, aptly-named vineyard – named for its proximity to a US Government listening post – is known for its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc. Creating a range of aromatic varietals, Spy Valley wines have been previously described as ‘impossible to ignore’. Winner of the Best of Wine Tourism at the 2013 Architecture and Landscape ceremony, Spy Valley Wines’ grounds are just as inviting as the taste of their wines.

Spy Valley Wines produce three different labelled wines; Satellite, Spy Valley and Spy Valley ENVOY. Satellite is fruit driven wine showcasing ‘varietal typicality with balance and poise’ and are produced and bottled on site by Johnson Estate, one of Marlborough’s top family-owned companies. Wines include the popular Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer.

The Spy Valley range has a more extensive wine list, catering to the ‘global discerning customer’. The fruit for these wines comes directly from the company’s estate in the lower Waihopai Valley as well as a handful of selected vineyard sites in the Wairau and Southern Valley areas. This is the label that carries the company brand, creating wines such as Echelon, Free Range Riesling, Pinot Noir Rose, Merlot/Malbec and Syrah to name a few.

Finally, the Spy Valley ENVOY is made up of a range of wines created from the single vineyard. These small micro-vineyard sites are located on Spy Valley’s own estate blocks and are grown and processed by experienced winemakers. Wines include Johnson Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, outpost Vineyard Pinot Gris and Noble Riesling. These textural and complex wines are made using the best winemaking tool around – time.

The Cellar Door is a great space for everyone to enjoy, including non-drinkers and children. Providing visitors with complimentary tastes of a large selection of their recognised wines. Non-drinkers can indulge in high-quality olive oil tastings while the young ones will love playing in the kids corner. Visitors can enjoy their aromatic Spy Valley wine looking over the picturesque vineyard and enjoying a picnic; a great way to end your visit to the Marlborough region.
