SEA LIFE Melbourne has opened its doors to a brand new ‘Ocean Invader’ exhibit, just in time for the school holidays. If you are looking for things to do with kids in Melbourne and love marine life, then trust us, you won’t want to miss out on this exhibit.
The $1.5 million dollar exhibit is a delight for the senses immersing guests into a whimsical world of jellyfish and is a permanent addition to the aquarium.
Experience jellyfish like you’ve never seen before in all their beauty. Yes, beauty, because after visiting the ‘Ocean Invaders’ exhibit you’ll have a greater appreciation for the species once you’ve seen them up close.
Ocean Invaders is spread out over three zones, taking guests on an underwater journey into the world of sea jellies filled with fascinating interactive displays that are both fun and educational.
Surrounded by thousands of jellies, the walk through the exhibit features multiple colourful displays accompanied by spectacular light projections that bring the exhibit to life.
Discover an array of facts about the lifecycle of a jellyfish in the enchanting exhibit with a sneak peek behind the scenes to see how SEA LIFE Melbourne experts tend to the blooms of these incredible, and sometimes dangerous, jellyfish.
Among some of the species that guests can encounter in the exhibit are the lion’s mane, blue blubber, Australian spotted, sea nettle and moon jellyfish.
Elsewhere in the exhibit, guests can escape the invasion of jellyfish by crawling through a cylindrical tank filled with oscillating jellyfish or get creative in the Jelly Lab and design a colourful jellyfish to be projected onto the giant walls.
Head of Curatorial at SEA LIFE Melbourne Paul Hale says the brand new exhibit gives guests a chance to learn more about the ancient sea creatures.
“Jellyfish are fascinating creatures that have been living in our oceans for over 500 million years. We look forward to enlightening guests about various species of this ancient animal and, in the near future, we hope to reveal additional species that have never been seen in Australian aquariums before,” said Mr Hale.
Spread out over 300 square metres, Ocean Invaders showcases the mesmerising creatures and explains the causes behind a population invasion and why this can be problematic for our oceans.
The gelatinous sea creatures are a mesmerising sight to see as they bob around in the water and after leaving the exhibit you’ll be able to decipher between the different species of jellyfish that exist in our precious ecosystem, including the Moon Jellyfish pictured below.
The Ocean Invaders exhibit joins a bevy of marine displays at SEA LIFE Melbourne. While you are here come and say hello to the penguins, wander through the coral caves, encounter graceful rays and sawfish in the Bay of Rays, lurk in the Crocodile Lair, face off with massive sharks in the Mermaid Garden or sit down to a special 4D cinema experience inside the aquarium.
