A colony of Little Blue Penguins have waddled into their brand new exhibit at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, just in time for the school holidays. The Little Blue Penguins are the first and only colony on the Sunshine Coast and they are settling into their new home nicely. Treat the family to a magical day out these school holidays and bring the kids along to the aquarium to say hello to Jonah, Stefan, Hilda, Sapphire, Aqua and Buruu.
The exhibit was 12 months in the making for SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast with meticulous planning going into designing an immersive exhibit that replicates the natural environment of a Little Blue Penguin.
The aquarium’s Little Blue Penguin zone showcases the life cycle of the world’s smallest penguin species and is full of educational facts about the cute creatures.
Little Blue Penguins spend 80% of their life in the water and only return to shore to breed, rest and moult, making for an important fact that needed to be taken into consideration during the construction of their cosy new home.
When guests wander into the zone, there is an above-ground observation deck to admire the excitable penguins as well as an underwater vantage point to appreciate their swimming ability in the water.
The flightless bird is among the smallest of Penguin species found in colonies along the South Coast of Australia and New Zealand and this exhibit gives wildlife lovers the unique opportunity to witness them up close like never before. The underwater area is so mesmerising, you could easily spend an hour gazing at the penguins diving in and out of the water swimming gracefully in their exhibit.
A visit to the aquarium is equal parts fun and educational with many interactive activities for the little ones to learn about the newest residents of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast.
Among some of the fun facts that you can learn at the new exhibit are the delicious treats the penguins like to eat, their lifecycle, where they are found in Australia and New Zealand and how and why they need our protection in the wild.
SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Mammal Manager, Carla Haskell says the penguins are a very sociable bunch and are enjoying all the visitors.
“There are so many unique personalities, including Sapphire who adores the company of humans and is a real chatterbox while Burru is a very inquisitive and curious about the hive of activity in the exhibit.”
As ambassadors for their species, the Little Blue Penguins have a big role to play at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, sharing the message of marine conservation with their newest human friends.
A dazzling display of marine creatures are waiting to be explored in the other exhibit within the aquarium too. Wander through the Ocean Tunnel and marvel at Grey Nurse Sharks, reef fish and rays swimming above you.
Surprises are in store at Seal Island just a few steps away. The cheeky animals solemnly swear they are up to no good in the animal presentations at 11 am and 1 pm. There is even a chance after the show to have your photo taken with one of the friendly seals.
A great way to introduce little ones to the wonders of the underwater world is through the tidal touch pool elsewhere in the aquarium, elsewhere in the aquarium, where beautiful sea stars, sea cucumbers and more can be found in the shallow water display. Little ones can get their hands wet with experts on hand to teach you all about marine life.
From Coastal Wrecks to Jellyfish Kingdoms, Seahorse Sanctuary, Shipwreck Shores and a Finding Dory and Friends experience, there is so much to explore here.
If you are looking for things to do with kids these school holidays, make sure to pay a visit to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast with the Little Blue Penguin exhibit a permanent feature included in all general admission tickets to the aquarium. Stretch their imaginations and open their minds to the possibility of a magical underwater world filled with marine life that inhabits our oceans.
