Why it’s nominated:

Renowned for its blend of natural wonders on both land and sea, Kaikoura‘s peninsula makes it a destination where the ocean plays a key role in its appeal. Famed for its encounters with marine life, and nestled between two mountain ranges, the town is relatively small on size but big on character, with a stunning contrast between its mountain backdrop and the vivid blue of the sea which lies nearby. If marine adventures and great seafood are of interest, Kaikoura ticks all the requisite boxes and then some.

aikoura sits on a peninsula roughly 2 hours drive away from Christchurch, and is a small, sleepy town with a population that numbers just a few thousand – all of which adds, rather than detracts, from its welcoming atmosphere. With a single main street dotted with a mixture of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops and surrounded by verdant greenery and its characteristic long pebble beach which extends along the town’s eastern perimeter, Kaikoura is host to a beautiful landscape that is quite visually stunning and makes for a wonderful photo subject in and of itself. While it’s often used as merely a stopover between Christchurch and the Marlborough region, Kaikoura’s beauty and wildlife offerings make it a picturesque travel destination in its own right.

Marine life is its obvious major calling card, with strong currents from the Pacific Ocean drawing much of it close to the mainland, and Kaikoura’s waters are home to a blend of whales, dolphins and seals – including its local colony of Southern Fur Seals that can be seen lounging around to the eastern edge of town. Whale watching in particular is famous here, with regular tours taking travellers for an up-close encounter with these massive, majestic giants of the sea; and while Humpbacks and Southern Right Whales are the most common, Sperm Whales and even the titanic Blue Whale can be spotted here on occasion. It’s widely regarded as one of the best Sperm Whale watching venues in the world – one that remains far more accessible to the public than similar alternatives.

The dolphins also play a key role in travel here, with both dolphin spotting – and even dolphin swimming – cruises offering visitors a chance at ticking off a true bucket-list item.

Kaikoura’s sea-focused offerings extend to the town’s culinary scene as well, as fresh seafood plays a large role in both the town’s economy and its restaurant’s offerings to travellers looking to eat their fill. Crayfish in particular are a specialty – as are shellfish in general – and as a result, those who love their seafood will find themselves in their element here, as the likes of fish-and-chips, chowders and various other seafood-based dishes can all be purchased from multiple spots throughout town.

On land, meanwhile, and the beauty of Kaikoura’s nature makes it an obvious target for exploration; its picturesque Kaikoura Ranges which extend almost all the way out to the ocean are a haven for hikers, with multiple walking tracks available that wind their way up through the mountains. The Fyffe-Palmer track is one of the more accessible of these, with a roughly 2 hour return loop that results in some wonderful views looking back over Kaikoura; those wanting more of a coastal vibe can instead follow the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway for an up-close look at the waters, seals and more in a single trip.
